One Big Tip Author - A Carhop The drive-in restaurant where I work charges customers extra for ketchup. A lot of customers don't see the small print on the menu, and order ketchup without knowing they have to pay extra for it, so I tell them when they order, so they have a chance to change their minds, and so they are not surprised if they look at their bill. One day while I was on my break, the other carhop who was covering for me tracked me down and told me one of my customers was insisting on seeing me before he would pay. So I took a minute to go see him. He paid his $7 bill with a credit card and added a $50 tip! He told me that the reason he wanted to see me was so he could explain why he was adding such a large tip. He explained that for several years he had never been told by a carhop at our restaurant that he was being charged for ketchup. Every time he wasn't told, he reduced his tip by the amount shown on his bill for ketchup. I was the first carhop who told him, in advance that he was being charged for ketchup, and he estimated that $50 was about the total of all of his tip reductions for ketchup charges at our restaurant over the years. I was so happy! I never knew how important it is to some customers to be told when it isn't clear that they are being charged for something, but I do now. That $50 tip came just before my rent was due, and made a big difference for me when I really needed a little extra money. |
