Bathing a Chickadee Author - A Gardener While I was bent down in my garden watering around a tomato plant with a green watering bucket, a small bird flew right up to the end of the spout where water was pouring out, hovering around the water and splashing in it as it streamed out. Taken by surprise, I first thought it was a hummingbird, but it was a little larger. It was a small chickadee. For about twenty seconds, as long as the water was pouring through the spout, the little chickadee splashed around in it, hovering and flying in and out of the water, no more than 18 inches from my face. I remained as motionless as I could. After the bucket was empty, the chickadee walked and splashed around in the puddle I had made under the tomato plant, oblivious to my presence, until the ground soaked up the puddle. While all of this was going on so close to me, several other chickadees flew about chirping as if to warn the little chickadee of my presence. But there it played innocently in the water, ignoring all around it. The water soaked into the ground and eventually the little chickadee flew away. I was left with a fond memory and a reminder of some of the subtle rewards of gardening. |
