Snake Eats Slug

Author - A Gardener

There are far fewer slugs near one edge of my garden than in other areas of the garden. I was wondering why until I happened upon at least part of the answer one day.

Recently, as I was walking near some weeds beyond one side of my garden I saw some tall grass move. I remained as still as I could and looked closely. I saw a garter snake. The garter snake had a large slug in its mouth and was proceeding to swallow it. I had been unaware that garter snakes ate slugs, but later learned that slugs, when they are present, are a normal part of a garter snake's diet.

Slugs are troublesome garden pests, and I was glad to see a garter snake helping control them. I have since seen more garter snakes around that area, but I seldom see slugs there.
