Attract Woodpeckers Author - A Birdwatcher Peck. Peck. Peck. Peck.... The sound is rhythmic and unmistakable. It's a woodpecker pecking at the remaining trunk of a dead tree. The 12 foot tall trunk rots slowly, helped along by colonies of insects, which attract beautiful and fascinating woodpeckers. A wind storm caused a few cedar and fir trees near my home to snap about fifteen feet up their trunks. I am leaving these trunks standing to attract more woodpeckers. In a short time, insects will invade these trunks just as they have the other. The insects will attract woodpeckers. More woodpeckers, more often, I hope. After I attract more woodpeckers to my woods, I hope to mount cameras and microphones to record the behavior and sounds of the woodpeckers.
