My daughter had a science project, to determine which brand of batteries lasted longest. She picked three brands of batteries ranging from the least expensive to the most expensive, with one brand in the middle. We tested the batteries in several different types of devices.

We found that in general, the more expensive batteries did last longer, but not enough longer to be a good deal in many types of devices. In other words, batteries that cost twice as much as other batteries, didn't last twice as long even though they did last somewhat longer. So the battery cost per hour to use most types of devices was actually higher for the higher priced batteries.

Now I test different batteries in new devices that I get, to determine whether the least expensive, moderately expensive or most expensive batteries are the most cost effective batteries for that device, and I buy the batteries that are the best value based on the hourly cost of using the batteries, not just the sale price of the batteries.

Some types of devices require certain types of batteries to operate properly, so I always follow the device manufacturer's recommendations for batteries if they provide them.
